About Eligibility
What is the VA Certificate of Eligibility (VA COE)?
At its core, the VA COE is your golden ticket to the VA home loan benefits, serving as proof to lenders someone meets the necessary service requirements set by the Department of Veterans Affairs. It not only signifies your eligibility but, also outlines the entitlement amount, which is crucial in determining the size of the loan you’re qualified for without a down payment. The base VA entitlement amount starts out same for all veterans and members, but those who may have a VA loan and are applying for another, or those who defaulted sometime in past would likely have a lower amount.

The VA COE is an integral part of the VA loan application process, acting as the foundation upon which your loan approval is built. It is the first step in the VA loan process. When you apply, a lender will pull your VA COE to verify and determine your VA loan eligibility. The COE confirms to lenders your honorable service, and that one is eligible for a VA home loan, thus ensuring one to secure financing under the VA loan’s more favorable terms.

Short answer, no. Your VA COE is shows the proof of your eligibility for a VA home loan. So if a veteran does not have proof they are eligible for the VA home loan benefit, then a lender cannot complete the VA loan. Any experienced VA lender can pull a veteran or member's COE, but if the VA's website and/or the VA is unable to provide the COE then the bank has no way of determining the veteran/member's eligibility.
Receiving the VA COE should be nearly instantaneous. However, older veterans (usually prior to 1981) sometimes have longer wait times for their VA COE. Occasionally, it can take a week or so for older veterans to receive their Certificate of Eligibility.
A VA COE application should never be denied. Sometimes there may be a request for more information, other times the COE isn't provided because the service member/veteran doesn't meet the criteria. This isn't necessarily a denial. However, if you feel the VA has made a mistake or want to appeal your discharge the VA provides info here .
You can use your VA home loan entitlement as long as you have remaining eligibility. You will need another VA COE pull to determine your remaining eligibility (if you still have a VA loan outstanding), or that your entitlement has been restored after you have sold your home and paid off the VA loan.

Eli was phenomenal and made the process of refinancing our home seamless. He was very friendly and kind and made us feel like a priority. We very highly recommend him!
Great throughout the entire process. Eli was extremely knowledgeable, communicated clearly, was laid back and wasn’t the typical high pressure sales guy. Loved the fact he is a veteran and really focuses on making sure other veterans and active duty folks are taken care of.

I trusted Elias to act in my best interest, He did. Never in a situation where I felt uncomfortable with the outcome of the loan product presented. I did not want to experience negative repercussions or stress, Elias knew me, the right loan and ran all necessary work and interference needed and empathized when I did stress!
